Everyday Market Tote Bag
Worked entirely in single crochet with worsted cotton, this tote holds its shape without any lining or stiffener. A great beginner project that only uses two stitches from start to finish.

Materials & Yarn
- 400–500 yds worsted cotton yarn
- 5mm crochet hook
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Crochet the base
Chain 31, then single crochet around the chain in an oval to form the base, increasing at both ends of each round twice.

- 2
Work the body
Continue in single crochet without increasing until the bag reaches 12 inches tall.
Tip: Use a stitch marker to track the start of each round — it is easy to lose your place in a spiral.

- 3
Shape the top opening
Work 2 rounds of single crochet decreasing slightly to snug in the opening.

- 4
Add the handles
Chain a long strap and single crochet back across it twice for a firm handle, then attach both ends securely to the inside of the bag.

Helpful Tips
- Cotton yarn stretches with wear and weight, so keep tension slightly tighter than usual.
- A cardboard disc slipped into the base gives the bag a flat, stand-up bottom.
